ChipMixer, one of the dark web’s largest cryptocurrency laundering sites, has been taken down by the US Justice Department and Europol. It laundered over $3 billion in cryptocurrency between 2017 and March 2023, through activities such as ransomware, darknet market, fraud, crypto heists, and various hacks. The operation involved the seizure of two domains and one Github account by US federal law enforcement and the German Federal Criminal Police, along with the seizure of the ChipMixer back-end servers and over $46 million in cryptocurrency. Founder Minh Quốc Nguyễn has been charged with money laundering, operating an unlicensed money-transmitting business, and identity theft. The investigation suggests that ChipMixer laundered around 152,000 Bitcoins, worth roughly EUR 2.73 billion.
